This paper presents and analyses a didactic sequence (SD) aimed at developing the reading comprehension and lexical competence of late learners of European Portuguese as a non-native language (PNNL), at intermediate level, through the exploration of the short story A Arca do Tesouro, by Alice Vieira (Vieira, 2010). This proposal seeks to reflect on the particularities of the use of literary texts in the teaching of PNNL. The different exercises and tasks designed aim to promote a dynamic, collaborative and cooperative learning process, centered on the learner, and advocate the explicit teaching of the structures and sociopragmatic asset in promoting student motivation, stimulating interaction and intercultural dialogue, as well as promoting the development of their language skills.
