Active teaching-learning methodologies have been observed and utilized in diverse teaching areas. Active teaching methodologies is a broad term used to describe various educational approaches that situate students as agents in the learning process. These methodologies are important because they place the student in a position of protagonist of their own learning and, therefore, predict that the more the student gets involved in active learning activities, the more meaningful the learning experience will become, thus leading the student to become autonomous. In the context of university courses in the United States, the teacher’s role is indispensable for success in this class format and reflection on pedagogical practice is necessary for active teaching to be implemented and to facilitate student autonomy. In the United States, university classes in foreign literature tend to rely primarily on traditional lecture-based pedagogy. This study seeks to understand the impact of using these methodologies in advanced literary and cultural studies courses by examining the perspectives of students and the teacher of a literature class in Portuguese housed in a U.S. university.
